06 Aug 2016
Swimmers of the local baths beach were lucky to witness the appearance of two rare loggerhead sea turtles, or Caretta Caretta, swimming there without being afraid of people.

Moreover, swimmers claim they have noticed turtles at a number of other local beaches, including Rikkos beach in Geroskipou.

The Cyprus News Agency has interviewed the leader of the local swimmers association Mathoes Lerokipiotis, who proved that turtles were noticed in these areas recently and probably swimmers will meet them soon again.

In this interview he also mentioned that for many swimmers it was a perfect chance to admire the turtles from such a tiny distance. It is a great luck to meet these turtles at a public beach and many people were impressed by this occasion.

He also told that although these animals are very friendly and cannot do any harm to people, they must be defended by the government.

The loggerhead turtle and especially the green turtle, or Chelonia mydas, are under the threat of extinction, therefore authorities put o lot of efforts into protecting these species by law since 1971.
