
The famous 42-km race is planned to be conducted on the 5th of March. Two thousand sportsmen from all the countries are eager to take part in four major stages: the Cyprian marathon, the semi-marathon, the road race (10 kilometers) and the so-called “run for the fun” which distance covers 5 kilometers. Run manager, Stavros Kakourides, shares his thoughts: “Last year 1,800 runners participated in this marathon, but now that figure is surpassed”.
In 2017, 300 marathon runners are awaited. Last year there were only two hundred runners. Richard Waldron, the young sportsman from the United Kingdom, is eager to get in on the act. This time he has sworn to cut his course record.
As for the time being, the runner from Southampton is exercising intensely for this purpose.
29 years old Waldron has already a significant victory in his sports career – in 2016, he conquered marathon which was held in Palma de Mallorca in 2 h., 38 min., 31 sec. In the year of 2005, runner from Jordan named Salameh Al Aqra made a record on the marathon on Cyprus. He managed to run the whole distance in 2 h., 33 min, and 3 sec. “This bout, Richard Waldron is aiming for 2 h. and 25 min. Well, we sincerely wish this young man to cut his record”, race manager shared.
The Paphos race will start at half past seven a.m. from place called Petra tou Romiou and will be run over mainly flat coat. It will end up along the esplanade of Paphos. The Cyprus marathon-2017 is traditionally held in honor of Stelios Kyriakides, famous runner born in Paphos. The race winners will then be awarded with real olive wreath granted by Dimitris, his son.
